The history of Bugatti cars go way back to 1900, when Ettore became inspired by the new petrol-engines and decided to build his own vehicle. A year later, he built his own and the first ‘Bugatti’ car (picture below) with the help of the Gulinelli brothers, which made its debut at the International Exhibition. Ettore won the T2 prize for the vehicle’s construction and design
Following the success and reputation of his first vehicle, Ettore approached the ‘De Dietrich Company’ to ask them to produce his vehicle. After facing a few minor challenges, the license was finally granted. Since, Bugatti was only 21 years old (a minor) his father signed the contract on his behalf. However, a few years later, the contract was terminated.

During this time, Ettore decided to join Emi Mathias, but that contract didn’t last long either. Regardless, Ettore wasn’t put off by the contract terminations and pursued his dream by opening his own plant. Therefore, in 1909 he sought financial help from de Vizcaya and founded the ‘Automobiles Ettore Bugatti’ in Molsheim, Alsace, France.
In 1910, the first machines for the Bugatti plant had been delivered. Therefore, the company soon began production of vehicles. A total of five cars were built that year, all of which were sold. The same year, Ernest Fredrich (Ettore Bugatti’s Assistant) participated in numerous races. This marked the beginning of a successful car company on the racing circuit.

1974 Lotus tries to move upmarket with the front-engine, four-seat Elite hatchback. Although surprisingly practical and motivated by a DOHC 16-valve 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 140 hp in U.S. tune, the Elite is expensive and arguably overpriced at $16,300 ($70,000 in 2010). In a May 1975 feature, Patrick Bedard calls the Elite “a Mustang II taken to the very highest limits, just as it could be said that an Elan was a much-massaged MGB refined until it was an unmistakably pure sports car. The word will get out on the Elite. When it does, there will be another legend in the making.” Lotus has often been associated with being overpriced and in a way I believe that is why they did not continue to try and make a "everyday" driver or mass produce a "common" vehicle.
